Black Lacquer Wedding Cabinet From Shanxi - 19th Century

Black Lacquer Wedding Cabinet From Shanxi - 19th Century

This dramatic antique Chinese black lacquer wedding cabinet would make a great centerpiece to any room. It dates to the 19th century, Qing dynasty (1644 - 1912) and is decorated with hand painted scholarly symbols. It is constructed from northern elm wood (yumu 榆木) and is from Shanxi province in Northern China.

This style of cabinet, is referred to as a 'wedding cabinet' in The West. It would have been commissioned by a scholar, the decorative painted symbols believed to inspire intellectual thoughts. The term 'Wedding cabinet' is a farcical story created by antique dealers in The West. The doors are decorated with paintings of vases, ornaments and games boards while the frame of the cabinet displays repeating geometric patterns. There are humorous decorative details including a small animal clinging to fruit in a bowl.

This cabinet is in excellent condition considering its age and has been sympathetically restored in our workshops by trained restorers. The black lacquer is worn with age and our restoration team has carefully consolidated and conserved the lacquer to avoid any losses.

Shanxi cabinets like this one are rare to find with original drawers which make this cabinet particularly functional.  The interior consists of a large interior space separated by a shelf with two drawers underneath. The bottom of the cabinet contains a lift-away hatch that conceals a further storage area at the bottom of the cabinet.
