Chinese Black Lacquer Taper Cabinet From Shanxi - Early 19thC

Chinese cabinets are made with exceptional craftsmanship. This black lacquer cabinet dates from the early 19th century and the style is from Shanxi province in Northern China is made from catalpa wood. The age of this piece can clearly be seen from the beautifully lacquered interior and back of the cabinet which is covered in a muted red lacquer.

The lacquer on the doors has worn away in places revealing an undercoating of burgundy lacquer and in some places, the elm wood beneath.

The style is the same as 18th century Ming Dynasty. Ming designs have elegance in their simplicity and are beautifully proportioned.

These Chinese cabinets were used for storage of silks, bedding and textiles. This beautiful Chinese Cabinet would make a fabulous wardrobe. Dating from 19thC
