'Visit Of The Prince At Nikko Shrine' Original Woodblock Print by Toyohara Chikanobu - Ca 1897
This old Japanese woodblock triptych is by Meiji era woodblock print artist Toyohara Chikanobu (1838 - 1912). This woodblock is entitled "Visit to Nikko Shrine" (日光御社参) and is taken from the series "Chiyoda Outer Palace" (千代田之御表).
The woodblock depicts the visit of the prince at the Nikko shrine (日光東照宮), which was erected by Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川家康), the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Today's Spring and autumn festivals known as 'processions of a thousand warriors' reenact this.
The triptych was originally published by Gusokuya who was owned by Fukuda Hatsujiro, in 1897.
The full triptych can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art & the British Museum.
