This lovely antique Indian spice box is from the Banswara region of Rajasthan in Northern India. Carved from a single piece of timber with great skill. The lid swivels to reveal nine compartments. One for each spice . The brass decoration has been added later.

Masala boxes & spice boxes were used daily in every household and were integral to every home. This beautifully carved box is a classic example of how divinity permeates everything in India. Boxes like these were used for storing spices, the word "masala" means 'spice mixture' in Hindi
