Carved Teak Horse Peg From Gujarat - 19th Century
This wonderfully carved teak wall peg has been caved in the shape of a horse and is from Northern Gujarat. Horses in this area were a symbol of fertility and wealth.
These pegs were found exclusively in the parsal part of a Gujarati home, the front hall where you could also access the first floor. Northern Gujarati houses were separated into three rooms, the otlo (balcony), parsal (middle room), and ordo (interior room).
The lotus flower carving is a later addition, also a fertility symbol. Over time, it's developed a rich patina. This would make a great ornamental piece or quirky gift.
