Carved Stone Seated Guanyin Statue
This reproduction Guanyin is the Buddhist bodhisattva associated with compassion and equivalent to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
Although originally recorded as living on Mount Potalaka, Guanyin is a prominent figure throughout East Asia. Each culture has an adopted home of Guanyin with pilgrimages in China, Japan, Tibet and Nepal. The pose of Dhyana Mudra was used by Buddha during his final meditation beneath the Bodhi tree before achieving enlightenment.
The subject is taken from the Gandavyuha chapter of the Avatamsaka sutra in which Guanyin is visited on Mount Potalaka (in the southern seas) and found sitting before a rocky grotto watching the reflection of the moon in the water and meditating on the illusionary nature of existence.
