Stone Lamp Niche From Jaisalmer On Stand - 19th Century

Hand-carved from the warm golden sandstone of Jaisalmer, this 19th-century three-way lamp niche would originally have been set beside a doorway, holding small oil lamps or candles to illuminate entrances at dusk. Such niches are characteristic of the desert architecture of Northern Rajasthan, where the honey-toned stone of Jaisalmer lends both strength and beauty to façades.

This example features three slender arched openings divided by simple carved columns, each crowned with stylised foliate detailing. The restrained geometric framing and softly weathered surface highlight the natural warmth and texture of the sandstone. Subtle tonal variations — from sandy ochre to deeper sun-warmed hues — enhance its sculptural depth and authenticity.

Now mounted on a custom iron stand, the niche has been thoughtfully presented as a freestanding decorative object, allowing it to be displayed on a console, mantel or shelf.
