This beautifully patinated antique Chinese box was made for the storage of grain.
Dating from the 19th century it shows signs of its age. It's lacquer has mostly worn away which gives its rustic charm.
Traditionally, these boxes were decorated with village scenes from an opera or poem and were primarily found in Shanxi province. Made from pliable poplar wood.
