Painted Choksar Prayer Table from Mongolia - 19th Century
This is a beautiful specimen of an antique 19th-century Painted Choksar Prayer Table from Mongolia. It features delicate floral artwork painted in two central frames, surrounded by a repeating pattern along the edges of the piece.
Choksars (as with antique Mongolian and Tibetan furniture in general) are becoming increasingly rare. Choksars were used as prayer tables by monks for reading scrolls and books. A yak butter lamp would be burnt regularly which is why so much Tibetan and Mongolian furniture is covered in a sticky residue. Our expert team has sensitively restored this piece, cleaning the residue whilst retaining its age and patina.
