
Brass Bound Teak Chest From Gujarat - 19th Century
This antique Indian brass bound chest dates to the 19th century. The style is from Gujarat in Northern India and would have been used for storing valuables such as textiles, jewelry & cash. There is also an interior box for storing candles which would have been valuable, especially in the darker times of the year.
It is constructed from large planks of teak wood and has its original brass fittings and handles. The iron handles on the side are original and are traditionally found on British Military chests hinting at who could have been the original owner could have been. There is a historic repair on the top using an old metal patch.
The perfect size for a coffee table with a sturdy chain that prevents the lid from falling open and straining the hinges.
