Brass Bound Indian Teak Chest - 19th Century

Brass Bound Indian Teak Chest - 19th Century

This antique Indian brass bound chest dates to the 19th century. The style is from Gujarat in Northern India and would have been used for storing valuables such as textiles, jewellery & cash. There is an interior box for storing candles which would have been valuable, especially in the darker times of the year.

At some point in its life, a previous owner has decorated the inside of the lid with multiple cuttings and postcards adding a further point of interest.

This Indian chest is constructed from teak wood and has its original brass fittings and handles.  Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced Indian design.
