Blue & White Porcelain Planter - Qilin In Clouds

Blue & White Porcelain Planter - Qilin In Clouds

This reproduction Chinese blue & white porcelain fish bowl is hand painted and made in the classic Ming style. It is perfect for a garden planter and has been decorated with qilin (mythical animals bringing good luck & prosperity).

These were originally used to keep fish in (usually carp). Today, they are far more likely to be used as planters and are made in small batches by hand. It is not factory made fine porcelain. Most potters have learned their craft from the elders of their family and these skills been handed down through the generations.

Porcelain is steeped in centuries of Chinese culture and history. Even though pottery developed in China 15,000 years ago, most experts believe that true porcelain (which also originated in China) didn't emerge in the region until the Han Dynasty (202 BC to 220 AD). Blue and white porcelain is glazed using a transparent porcelain glaze dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907). Chinese dragons are a symbol of power, strength, and good luck The Emperors of China used the dragon as a symbol of their imperial power and strength.
