Black Lacquer Painted Low Cabinet On Stand From Shanxi - Early 20thC
This low black lacquer side cabinet was once part of a rare Chinese stacking cabinet. These stacking cabinets comprised of four chests stacked atop each other.
It has its original rounded brass hardware which dates this piece to the early 20th century, around 1930. The vivid colours of painting reflected a time when a wider variety of paints were beginning to appear on the market making for more vivid scenes. The scene shown here of warriors on horseback is a departure from the more peaceful scenes shown on earlier cabinets of the past.
A new stand has been added to raise this piece for use as a coffee table or av unit. Two doors can be opened to reveal a large storage area.
For an example of a full stacking cabinet see Lyon & Turnbull 'Five Centuries' Auction 02/09/2020 - Lot 360 and the final photograph below.
