Tibetan Brass Bound Leather Trunk - 19th Century

Tibetan Brass Bound Leather Trunk - 19th Century

This Tibetan leather trunk comes from the west of Tibet, towards Nepal. The form is unusual as Tibetan chests are usually less deep. Constructed from yak leather bound onto poplar wood.

Chests and trunks were used as storage in homes and monasteries. They can be either painted wood or leather covered wood. The box is normally made from cedar, pine or poplar. This particular chest has some fantastic ageing on the leather.

It has become extremely difficult to find good quality Tibetan antiques these days and because of this many reproduction pieces are appearing on the market.
