Jaipur School Painting Of Krishna & The Gopis - 19th Century

This old Indian watercolour depicts Krishna & Radha standing on a lotus leaf flanked by The Gopis and their cow. The painting is excellent condition and in an old gilt frame. The style is of the Jaipur School of painting.

Krishna & Radha's story of eternal love is a deeply popular theme in Indian paintings. Often called 'Radha Krishna', it is a romantic tale depicting the beauty of romantic and physical love. Radha was already married and they engaged in a passionate intermarital affair transcending traditional mortal relationships and morality. The subject has become more secular than religious and symbolises the union between the human soul and the divine.
