Painted Indian House Shrine From Gujarat - 19th Century

Painted Indian House Shrine From Gujarat - 19th Century

This wonderfully carved antique Indian shrine is from Gujarat and would have been set into a wall and used to house the family's favourite deity in a Hindu or Jain household. Dating from the 19th century, the central doors can be opened or closed. The traditional Mughal mihrab arch is flanked by two pillars surmounted by parrots. This house temple still has many layers of its original and earlier paint.

Today, these are often used as decorative shelves or places to display ornaments. This is not free standing and should be wall mounted. Supplied fitted with wall hangers.
