Painted Sideboard From Qinghai - 19th Century

Painted Sideboard From Qinghai - 19th Century

This painted antique Chinese sideboard is from the western province of Qinghai. It has retained its original painting and dates to the 19th century. This has a clear Mongolian influence, however, the painting is more indicative of the Chinese style. Mongolian & Qinghai sideboards were usually made from locally sourced wood, normally elm, poplar, or pine.

These cabinets were used by nomadic people for the storage of clothes and bedding or grain. Also used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship.

From Qinghai Province, China.
