Indian Almirah Cabinet With Sunburst Panels - 19th Century

Indian Almirah Cabinet With Sunburst Panels - 19th Century

This painted Indian sunburst almirah cabinet is beautifully carved and dates to the 19th century. Many Indian cabinets were originally recessed into walls and freestanding cabinets are less common. It is constructed from green painted teak wood with light crackling, which gives a wonderful texture. Additional character comes from old metalwork patches found on the side of this piece.

The core Portuguese occupation did not expand beyond Southern India, however, these cabinets can be found in Gujarat further north, showing how trade and styles transcended regional borders. The sunburst motif is often found on Portugese inspired furniture.
