Painted Pillar Capitol Candlestand - 19th Century

Painted Pillar Capitol Candlestand - 19th Century

This unusual 19th century Indian pillar capital candlestand has a wonderfully sculptural presence, with its stepped octagonal base, rounded mouldings and ring of bead-like carving around the top. Originally part of an architectural element, it has been repurposed as a candlestand, giving new life to a fragment of old Indian craftsmanship. Layers of worn blue and green paint, together with the weathered timber surface, give it a richly timeworn character that would sit beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Its architectural form makes it especially appealing as a decorative object in its own right, while the shallow metal candle cup at the top allows it to function as a striking candleholder. The distressed painted finish and visible age-related wear are very much part of its charm, highlighting its long history and handmade construction.
