Iron Bound Teak Stick Chest From Kutch - 19th Century

Iron Bound Teak Stick Chest From Kutch - 19th Century

This 19th century Indian chest is unusual in having front opening doors rather than a lid and comes from Kutch. This is the first time that we have seen a chest of this style and it is reminiscent of the damchiyas of Kutch mixed with influences of Jaiselmer stick boxes. It also has a secondary compartment inside the main compartment with its own door and latch.

There are an extraordinary variety of styles found across India reflecting the many cultures that influenced India. Chests were used mostly for storing valuables such as textiles, jewellery and cash but were also given as dowry.
