Stone Padma Mandala Panel From Jaisalmer - 19th Century

Stone Padma Mandala Panel From Jaisalmer - 19th Century

Hand-carved in the desert city of Jaisalmer during the 19th century, this sandstone panel captures the luminous warmth of the region’s celebrated golden stone. At its centre blooms a beautifully rendered Padma-mandala (पद्म मण्डल) — the traditional circular lotus motif found throughout Jain temple thresholds and haveli façades. Radiating in rhythmic symmetry, this blossoming form also echoes the ancient concept of the Surya-padma (सूर्य पद्म), where the lotus and sun merge symbolically to represent creation, purity and divine light.

Above this radiant medallion, a pair of stylised peacocks stand in graceful balance, their forms anchored below a small mihrab arch topped with a delicate trishul-point finial. Such elements were common in architectural panels across western Rajasthan, where artisans worked golden Jaisalmer stone into devotional, protective and auspicious imagery. Its softly weathered surface, original patina and minor edge wear reveal genuine age, while the crisp geometry of the carving reflects the discipline and refinement of śilpa tradition.

Mounted on a custom metal stand, this fragment now reads as a sculptural object—a distilled piece of temple and haveli vocabulary that brings the atmosphere of desert craftsmanship into a contemporary interior.
