Coat Hook Panel From South India - 19th Century

Salvaged from a building that had fallen into disrepair in South India, this finely carved wooden lintel dates to the 19th century and is decorated with elegant peacock and floral motifs. Originally positioned above a doorway, it has since been thoughtfully converted into a distinctive coat hanger, allowing its decorative carving to be appreciated in a contemporary interior.

The central panel is flanked by richly carved peacocks, long associated in Indian culture with beauty, renewal, and prosperity, while surrounding floral and foliate detailing adds rhythm and balance to the composition.
