Brass Bound Teak Military Chest - 19th Century
This antique brass bound Anglo-Indian military chest dates to the 19th century and is the perfect size for a coffee table.
It is constructed from beautifully patinated teak and retains its original brass and iron fittings and handles. The interior consists of one large compartment, a candle box, and a sturdy chain to prevent the lid from straining its hinges. The chest bears a brass nameplate inscribed with the initials D x M, alongside markings in Devanagari script which read 13 x 24, perhaps a soldier's allocation number to identify a regiment or depot.
Military chests such as this were commissioned for officers of the British Indian Army to carry their kit and personal possessions while on tour. They were made to order and designed to withstand considerable wear in transit. This piece, with its handsome brass strapwork and engraved details, is a fine example of an Anglo-Indian military chest.
