Red Lacquer Cabinet From Gansu - 19th Century
This exquisite antique lacquered Chinese cabinet is from Gansu province on the border with Mongolia and dates to the 19th century. It's an excellent example of Gansu workmanship featuring fluid painting over a deep red lacquer. The painting depicts scholarly objects; vases on stands, books, incense stands, and trees with twisted branches.
The cabinet has been customised to be suited for use as a TV cabinet; the door pivots have been replaced with brass hinges, the drawers have been converted from fixed panels, and a hole for cables added to the back of the cabinet.
Cabinets like this one were multifunctional but were often used for clothes storage. Given the dramatic stature of this piece, it suggests this could have been made for a wealthy scholar. The style and form indicate this to be from the eastern part of Gansu bordering Ningxia & Mongolia.
