Glazed Chinese Display Cabinet - 19th Century

Glazed Chinese Display Cabinet - 19th Century

This impressive antique Chinese display cabinet originated from the port city of Tianjin & surrounding areas in Northern China and features classic lattice doors with glass panels. This simple design originated in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). This piece dates to the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911) (1644-1911) and is constructed from catalpa wood (zi mu 梓木). In the area of Tianjin, catalpa wood was often used in the construction of furniture for wealthier individuals. The brass hardware is original to the piece.

This cabinet would be perfectly suited for storing books and would have been made for a scholar. Originally it was lacquered in a burgundy lacquer (still visible on the sides). The front is finished with a clear lacquer and French polished to show off the beautiful wood grain. Inside, it offers a spacious storage area with two shelves and eight smaller drawers for added storage. The bottom compartment can be easily accessed through a large square removable hatch. Both the top and bottom sections can come apart, making it easier to move. Its large yet elegant design makes it a perfect choice for a larger room or hallway.
