Antique Chinese Altar Table - 19th Century

Antique Chinese Altar Table - 19th Century

This exquisite 19th-century lacquer altar table from Fujian is a masterwork of southern Chinese craftsmanship. The richly layered red and black lacquer is intricately decorated with hand-painted gilt panels depicting scenes of courtly life, ceremony, and reverence-each vignette reflecting the cultural sophistication of Qing dynasty artisans. The table's sculptural apron and cabriole legs are carved in dynamic scrollwork, then highlighted with delicate floral giltwork that enhances its dramatic presence. This piece comes with two drawers for storage which were originally fixed panels.

Originally used in ancestral worship or temple ritual, this piece has been sympathetically modified for modern display while preserving its authenticity and aged beauty. Whether used as a console, sideboard or statement feature, it remains a striking example of lacquer artistry from a region renowned for its distinctive, theatrical aesthetic.
