Oak Altar Table From Gansu - Early 19thC

Oak Altar Table From Gansu - Early 19thC

Altar Table With Oak Top & Elm Legs From Gansu - 19thC

It is very rare to find antique furniture from China made from Oak. The Oak is identifiable by the Medullary rays on the table top.

During the Ming period, furniture craftsmen would often create pieces with multiple woods. Given that this piece is made form both Oak and Elm gives it a good age.

Usually a family ancestor portrait would be hung above the table & joss sticks lit & placed on the table for the well being of the household.

They were always long & narrow in form - a configuration seldom found in antique European furniture.
