An Engraved Glass Globe Handi Lamp with a single light fitting - Late 19thC. These glass lamps are known in India as Handis or Hundis named after a cooking pot. Rather surprisingly they are not Indian, but European in origin. They were exported to India as lighting for large homes and palaces in the 19th century. Candles or oil lamps were placed inside the glass bell and the glass lid prevented soot from marking the ceiling. Many survived on the tall ceilings unlike their European counterparts which were taken down and smashed when electricity arrived. Our antique handis are mostly 19th or early 20th century. We also stock reproduction handis which are made in India
Includes wired brass fitting.The height could be a little less with chain links removed.
