Rare Glass Hundi Lamp With 3 Way Fitting - Mid 19thC
A rare glass handi lamp - mid 19thC with 3 way light fitting. These glass lamps are known in India as Handis or Hundis named after a cooking pot. Rather surprisingly they are not Indian, but European in origin. They were exported to India as lighting for large homes and palaces in the 19th century. Candles or oil lamps were placed inside the glass bell and the glass lid prevented soot from marking the ceiling. Many survived on the tall ceilings unlike their European counterparts which were taken down and smashed when electricity arrived. Our antique handis are mostly 19th or early 20th century.
All wiring is tested in the U.K. Supplied with1 metre of flex and 1 metre of chain as standard. If you require a longer chain & flex please contact us for a quote.
Brass ceiling hooks can also be supplied if required at extra cost.
