4 Drawer Chinese Elm Altar Table - 19thC

This provincial Chinese altar table is made in classic Ming style and dates from the 19th century. It is from Shanxi province in Northern China. It has four drawers and would be perfect in a hallway given its shallow depth. It is constructed from Northern elm (yumu).

Altar tables were used for ancestor worship in China & Mongolia. Usually, a family ancestor portrait would be hung above the table & joss sticks lit & placed on the table for the well being of the household. These tables also doubled as occasional tables in Chinese traditional homes.
