Scholars Desk with three drawers from Shanxi Province - dating from the 19th century. Chinese Desks were generally made from elm, red elm or walnut , or sometimes from Oak.
Red Elm, also known as zelkova or southern elm (jumu) is considered superior to it's northern elm (yumu) cousin as it has a more refined grain structure.
