Red Elm Console Table From Shanxi - Late 19thC
This antique Chinese console table comes from Shanxi province in Northern China and was made during the Qing dynasty (1644 to 1912). It is constructed from southern elm (jumu), also known as zelkova or red elm which has distinctly more intricate wood grain in comparison to northern Chinese elm. The brass hardware is a later replacement as the original would have been robbed during Mao's cultural revolution.
As can be seen from the green table depicted in the painting, this style of table was often used as utility furniture and could be found in multiple rooms. It is constructed in the Ming style with clean lines and hoof feet and dates to the 19th century.
