3 Door Painted Shanxi Sideboard - Ca 1920
This vintage painted sideboard is from Northern Shanxi province, specifically, the area bordering Mongolia. It dates to the 1920's. It has its original painting and the styles reflect a blend of Shanxi and Mongolian influences. Although some paint has worn with years of constant use, flowers and household objects such as vases and scrolls are still visible on the doors. This piece has been sensitively conserved. A wonderfully carved kickboard runs along the bottom of the piece.
These cabinets were used by nomadic people for storage of clothes and bedding or grain. Also used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship. Originally, these would have opened from the top and the fronts would have been closed. To reflect modern needs, they have been converted to front opening pieces.
