2 Door Painted Mongolian Sideboard - Ca 1920
A vintage painted sideboard from Mongolia, made in the 1920's. This piece has original floral painting on a beautiful deep red background. The kickboard also has traces of its original trailing floral paintwork.
These cabinets were used by nomadic people in Mongolia & neighboring southern Shanxi province for storage of clothes and bedding or grain. This piece is likely from the Mongolian, Shanxi border area. Also used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship.
The front doors have been modified from the original closed front to make it more functional. Originally, these sideboards would have opened only from the top, but this one still has the original opening hatches.
Two front doors and top hatches open outwards to reveal a large interior storage space separated by a simple shelf. The interior has been repainted in a simple white.
